How to convert htm to PDF without Header/Footer

Actually I did find a solution. Someone from the adobe users forum was able to shed some light on it. It’s a bit of a quirk it seems with that version.
Basically, before I could use the “create pdf from multiple files” option, I had to use the “create from web page option” and basically create a dummy pdf. During that process, there is a checkbox option that let’s you turn off the headers/footers on the page.

For some reason, you can’t just check that and then use the multiple files option, you have to go through the whole create from web page process. Once you do that, the setting “sticks” and you can then go through the “create from multiple files option” and voila…no stupid headers/footers (of course, you then have to go back and delete the dummy pdf you created earlier).

A bit of a PITA, but it works.

When You Want To Know God’s Will – F. B. Meyer

When You Want To Know God’s Will

One night the famous Bible teacher F.B. Meyer stood on the deck of a ship approaching land. As they guided the vessel in, he wondered how the crew knew when to to safely steer towards the dock. It was a stormy night, and visibility was low. Meyer, standing on the bridge and peering through the window, asked “Captain, “How do you know when to turn this ship into that narrow harbor?”

“That’s an art,” replied the captain. Do you see those three red lights on the shore? When they are all in a straight line, I go right in!”

Later, F.B Meyer wrote, “When we want to know God’s will, there are three things which always need to line up, the inward impulse, the Word of God, and the trend of circumstances. Never act until these three things agree.”

I think one of the most asked questions today by Christians is “How do I know God’s will for my life?”

Never doubt in the darkness what God has shown you in the light. There are certain truths you know to be right that God has shown you in your life, but often when faced with a time of darkness, we doubt these truths. When seeking God’s will for your life, always keep this in mind. The Bible teaches us not to “lean on our own understanding.”

This is where most of us get in trouble. Fear often demands that we make sense of everything right now, when God is teaching us something through the trial. Many answers are not known until He reveals His purpose at the end of that difficult season. My experience with God is that He sometimes works outside of our own understanding making and molding our lives so that our will becomes His.

I like F.B. Meyer’s advice on seeking God’s will. Examine your inward impulses, seek the Word of God on the subject, and examine the circumstances that are outside of your control to see where your control ends and where His leading begins.

A Simple Fix for Saving Pictures in IE

The problem is where right-clicking on an image brings up the option in Internet Explorer to (only) save that image as a Bitmap file, aka .bmp.

The symptoms are rather obvious: Internet Explorer, even with all of the most recent updates, may sometimes refuse to let you save images in any format other than Bitmap. The problem is caused when a “damaged” or “unknown” program is sitting in your “%systemroot%\Downloaded Program Files” folder (usually C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files).

The fix is simple. First, empty your Temporary Internet Files to clear the cache (In IE, go to Tools: Internet Options, and chose “Delete Files” in the “Temporary Internet Files” section of the first tab). This can take several minutes to complete if you have allocated a lot of space. Next, browse to your ‘Downloaded Program Files’ folder, and delete any program that is listed as either “unknown” or “damaged.” That should do it. Some users have found that other applications downloaded into that folder can cause the problem. If the above fix does not work, you may need to start removing those applications one by one to find the offender. Once the offending program is deleted, you should be able to save as the appropriate image type again.

Fanny Crosby

Frances Jane van Alystyne (Fanny Crosby)
1820-1915
Hymn Writer

Quotes:

About her blindness, Fanny said:

“It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me.”

If I had a choice, I would still choose to remain blind…for when I die, the first face I will ever see will be the face of my blessed Saviour.”

Biography:

Frances Jane Crosby was born into a family of strong Puritan ancestry on March 24, 1820. As a baby, she had an eye infection which an incompetent doctor treated by placing hot poultices on her red and inflamed eyelids. The infection did clear up, but the result was that scars formed on the eyes, and the Fanny became blind for life. A few months later, Fanny’s dad became ill and died. Mercy Crosby, widowed at 21, hired herself out as a maid while Grandmother Eunice Crosby took care of little Fanny.

Fanny’s grandmother took on the education herself and became the girl’s eyes, vividly describing the physical world. Grandmother’s careful teaching helped develop Fanny’s descriptive abilities, she also nurtured Fanny’s spirit. She read and carefully explained the Bible to her, and she always emphasized the importance of prayer. When Fanny became depressed because she couldn’t learn as other children did, Grandmother taught her to pray to God for knowledge.

A landlady of the Crosby’s also had an important role in Fanny’s development. Mrs. Hawley helped Fanny memorize the Bible, and often the young girl learned five chapters a week. She knew the Pentateuch, the Gospels, Proverbs, the Song of Solomon, and many of the Psalms by heart. She developed a memory which often amazed her friends, but Fanny believed she was no different from others. Her blindness had simply forced her to develop her memory and her powers of concentration more. Blindness never produced self-pity in Fanny and she did not look on her blindness as a terrible thing. At eight years old she composed this little verse:

Oh, what a happy child I am, although I cannot see!
I am resolved that in this world contented I will be!
How many blessings I enjoy that other people don’t!
So weep or sigh because I’m blind, I cannot – nor I won’t.

In 1834 Fanny learned of the New York Institute for the Blind and knew this was the answer to her prayer for an education. She entered the school when she was twelve and went on to teach there for twenty-three years. She became somewhat of a celebrity at the school and was called upon to write poems for almost every conceivable occasion.

On March 5, 1858, Fanny married Alexander van Alystyne, a former pupil at the Institute and now taught there as a professor. He was a musician who was considered one of the finest organists in the New York area. Fanny herself was an excellent harpist, played the piano, and had a lovely soprano voice. Even as an old woman (Fanny lived to be 95) Fanny would sit at the piano and play everything from classical works to hymns to ragtime. Sometimes she even played old hymns in a jazzed up style.

After her marriage, Fanny left the Institute, and in a few years she found her true vocation in writing hymns. She had an agreement with the publishers Bigelow and Main to write three hymns a week for use in their Sunday school publications. Sometimes Fanny wrote six or seven hymns a day. Though Fanny could write complex poetry as well as improvise music of classical structure, her hymns were aimed at bringing the message of the Gospel to people who would not listen to preaching. Whenever she wrote a hymn, she prayed God would use it to lead many souls to Him.

In her own day, the evangelistic team of Dwight L. Moody and Ira D. Sankey effectively brought Fanny Crosby’s hymns to the masses. Today many of her hymns continue to draw souls to their Savior for both salvation and comfort: ” Blessed Assurance,” “All the Way My Savior Leads Me,” “To God Be the Glory, ” “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior,” ” Safe in the Arms of Jesus,” “Rescue the Perishing,” “Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross,” “I Am Thine, O Lord,” and many more.

Though her hymn writing declined in later years, Fanny was active in speaking engagements and missionary work among America’s urban poor almost until the day of her death in 1915. She sought to bring others to her Savior not only through her hymns but through her personal life as well. What happened when Fanny died? Perhaps one of her later hymns tells it best:

When my lifework is ended and I cross the swelling tide,
When the bright and glorious morning I shall see,
I shall know my Redeemer when I reach the other side,
And His smile will be the first to welcome me.

I shall know Him, I shall know Him,
And redeemed by His side I shall stand!
I shall know Him, I shall know Him
By the print of the nails in His hand.

Fanny Crosby was probably the most prolific hymnist in history, writing over 8,000 hymns. As many as 200 different pen names were given to her works by hymn book publishers so that the public wouldn’t know she wrote so large a number of them. She produced as many as seven hymns/poems in one day. On several occasions, upon hearing an unfamiliar hymn sung, she would inquire about the author, and find it to be one of her own!

If you were to take fifteen hymnals and stack them one on top of another. Taken all together, that’s about the number of hymns Fanny wrote in her lifetime! Of course, many of those have been forgotten today, but a large number remain favorites of Christians all over the world. In her lifetime, Fanny Crosby was one of the best known women in the United States and a strong Christian whose legacy of faithfulness to God is exhibited by the hymns that will be sung for all eternity!

A Spiritual Autobiography of Jessie Penn Lewis

The Leading of the Lord

A Spiritual Autobiography

I was brought up in the very heart of the religious life of Wales, for my grandfather was a Welsh Divine, well known throughout the Principality in his day; and my father’s house was a rendezvous for the ministers as they passed hither and thither on their Master’s work. My childhood’s memories gather round their visits and the great meetings of the Sunday-schools, when often I sat as a tiny child in the midst of the grave elders in the “big pew” listening with intense interest to the “hwyl” of the minister. “The mercy of the Lord is … unto children’s children”; but as it often is with children brought up in the midst of religious surroundings, the true inward change of heart did not come until I had married and moved away to England. Then it occurred without the aid of any human instrument, but the day – New Year’s Day- and the hour are imprinted on my mind.

Only a deep, inward desire to know that I was a child of God; a taking down of my (too little read) Bible from the shelf; a turning over the leaves, and the eye falling on the words, “The Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all”; again, a casual turn of the sacred pages, and the words, “He that believeth hath eternal life. A quick facing out whether I did believe that God had laid my sins upon the Lamb of God on the Cross; a pause of wonderment that it really said that I had eternal life if I simply believed God’s Word; a quick cry of “Lord I do believe” – and one more soul had passed from death to life, a trophy of the grace of God, and the love of Him Who died. The Spirit of God instantly bore witness with my spirit that I was a child of God, and deep peace filled my soul.

The beginning of “Leading of the Lord”

Written for “The Christian” in 1903

Jessie Penn-Lewis

Jessie Penn-Lewis
(1861–1927)

Jessie Penn-Lewis was a Welsh evangelical speaker and author of a number of Christian evangelical works.

Early lifePenn-Lewis was born in Victoria Terrace, Neath in 1861[1]. Her father was a Methodist minister. She was married to William Penn-Lewis.

Welsh revivalShe was involved in the 1904-1905 Welsh Revival, one of the largest Christian revivals ever to break out, although the revival was abruptly shortened with the mental and physical collapse of one of the leaders, Evan Roberts. Penn-Lewis traveled internationally to take her message to audiences in Russia, Scandinavia, Canada, the U.S., and India.

Penn-Lewis was close to Evan Roberts and there is some controversy associated with her influence over him. After the breakdown by Roberts cut the revival short, he stayed with the Penn-Lewis’s for a couple of years, but never fully recovered. Ultimately, Penn-Lewis declared some of phenomena of the Welsh Revival to be the work of Satan, declaring her still controversial position in her book on spiritual warfare called War on the Saints, which describes the work of demons on Christians, the theme for which Penn-Lewis is most known.

Influences

Penn-Lewis was influenced by the reformed South African writer Andrew Murray among others, and her books contain quotes from him and references to his works. Frank Buchman, the founder of the Oxford Group, credits Penn-Lewis with helping him to turn his life around from depression when he heard her speak at a Keswick Convention.[3] She also influenced Johan Oscar Smith, the founder of Brunstad Christian Church and the missionary statesman Norman Grubb.

Eva of Friedenshort

Eva of Friedenshort
(October 31, 1866 – June 21, 1930)

Eva von Tiele-Winckler was born in southeastern Germany into a family of nobility and wealth. Eva had a conversion experience at the age of 17 after reading John 10. She established a home called Friedenshort, meaning an abode of peace, for women who desired to follow and serve the Lord. With these sisters she opened homes for orphans, widows, and the poor and infirm. By the end of her lifetime, over 40 homes had been established in Germany through her labor. These sisters also preached the gospel in women’s prisons and set up homes where these women could live when discharged from prison. Although she was brought up in wealth, Eva lived a simple life and used her wealth for others’ benefit. She eventually sent a number of sisters to China to serve with the China Inland Mission, and others to Guatemala, Africa, and India. She was helped in her spiritual pursuit through contact with Mrs. Jessie Penn-Lewis, Hudson Taylor, the Welsh Revival, and the Keswick Convention.

Sister Eva enjoyed fellowship with all true believers. She would not let sectarian attitudes or doctrinal differences hinder her fellowship with other saints. The hymn from which the verse below is taken describes the church’s divisive condition and the writer’s longing to find believers who live in oneness, not letting doctrines and practices divide them. It is a sober reminder to us that our divine birth is a common birth and that Christ’s death has torn down all that divides believers.

-Del Martin

“Where is the truth?” I asked; for this I longed:
None answered right ‘mid all the answering throng;
For ever side by side lay light and shade.
“Where is,” I cried, “the one communion pure?
Where is the Church in which, clear-traced and sure,
The Spirit’s very likeness is portrayed?”

– Eva of Friedenshort
