一七八一年，马廷生于英国康瓦尔。一八○五年，他被任命为东印度公司的牧师。有四年时间，他向欧洲人各印度人传福音，建立学校。他将新约译成印度文、波斯文及阿拉伯译本。一八一二年，他在中亚细亚去世，享年三十一岁，为主烧尽。
