Chapter 9
Unfortunately, years of hardwork finally had taken its toll. Dr. Mills suffered three heart attacks, the last one while in Guatemala inspecting the aftermath of a devastating earthquake.. In 1980, he underwent a triple bypass surgery. The following year, he retired from CCF, the one and only organization he ever worked for in the past 36 years.
His life came to a full circle after his retirement. With the compassion of Jesus, he easily sensed the spiritual need of the Chinese in Richmond,Mills at Rotary Club Virginia. Together with another retired missionary, Dr. Eugene Hill, and several Chinese Christians in the community, they founded the Chinese Baptist Church of Richmond. To date, the church membership has grown to over 300, completely financially self-sufficient, and have their own buildings over an 8 acre campus.
Mills retired     With stories of his adventures in China, he easily won the respect and admiration of people in the community. His love and compassion, however, extended way beyond preaching, counseling and fellowshiping with church members. He frequently volunteered himself to interpret for Chinese in court and immigration office. When some Chinese restaurants need help, he would even go into the kitchen and help with cooking. Furthermore, he often invited Chinese students in nearby universities to his home to enjoy sumptuous Chinese meals he cooked for them himself.
In 1987, The Millses moved to Fresno, California. With some physical limitation, Mills continued to be very active in the community. He was a favorite speaker of churches , schools, and civic clubs in Central California and beyond, witnessing to people how, through faith, God had helped him overcome numerous seemingly impossible situations. Also, he became a very respected elder of the Fresno Chinese Gospel Church, an interdenominational Christian church. Working behind the scene, he quietly guided the church in the writing of the constitution and bylaws, in formulating the church building plan, and in making many decisions. Most importantly, he became the mentor of a church member who is attending the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary. Every week, Mills spent time with him, going over the sermon and teaching all the practicality of being a pastor, just like what he did in China years ago. This continued until the last week of his life when he was too ill to carry on.
