经文: 你是属谁的?(撒母耳记上三十:13)

基督徒的生命中是没有中立区的。我们若不在耶稣为王的旗帜下,向祂效忠,为祂争战,就成为邪恶之子-撒但的工具。你是属谁的?让我来帮助你回应。你是否已经重生了?如果答案是肯定的,你就是属于基督的;若未经新生,你不能属祂。你信任谁?那些相信耶稣的才是上帝的儿子。你为谁工作?当然你是服事你的主人,你所服事的人显然就是你的主人。你的朋友是谁?你若属于耶稣,你会与那些披戴十架记号的人联合。你的言谈是什么?是属天的或是属地的?你从你的主人那里学到了什么?你若花时间与耶稣同处,以下的话就是对你说的,就如同当初对彼得和约翰说的一样──“认明他们是跟过耶稣的”(徒四:13)。问题仍是:“你是属谁的?”你若不属基督,就必在苦役之中。从残酷主人的控制下逃跑吧!进入事奉爱之主的行列中,你将享受蒙福的一生。你若属于基督,就必须作四件事。你若属于耶稣,就是顺服祂。让祂的话语成为你的律例,让祂的希望成为你的意愿。你若属于那位至爱者,就要爱祂。让你的心拥抱祂,让你的灵充满祂。你若属于上帝的儿子就要信靠祂。除祂以外,别无安息之处。你若属于万王之王,为祂坚定不移。如此,你的生命将向全世界显明你是属谁的。

Scripture: “To whom belongest thou?”(1 Samuel 30:13)

No neutralities can exist in religion. We are either ranked under the banner of Prince Immanuel, to serve and fight his battles, or we are vassals of the black prince, Satan. “To whom belongest thou?”
Reader, let me assist you in your response. Have you been “born again”? If you have, you belong to Christ, but without the new birth you cannot be his. In whom do you trust? For those who believe in Jesus are the sons of God. Whose work are you doing? You are sure to serve your master, for he whom you serve is thereby owned to be your lord. What company do you keep? If you belong to Jesus, you will fraternize with those who wear the livery of the cross. “Birds of a feather flock together.” What is your conversation? Is it heavenly or is it earthly? What have you learned of your Master?-for servants learn much from their masters to whom they are apprenticed. If you have served your time with Jesus, it will be said of you, as it was of Peter and John, “They took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.”
We press the question, “To whom belongest thou?” Answer honestly before you give sleep to your eyes. If you are not Christ’s you are in a hard service-Run away from your cruel master! Enter into the service of the Lord of Love, and you shall enjoy a life of blessedness. If you are Christ’s let me advise you to do four things. You belong to Jesus-obey him; let his word be your law; let his wish be your will. You belong to the Beloved, then love him; let your heart embrace him; let your whole soul be filled with him. You belong to the Son of God, then trust him; rest nowhere but on him. You belong to the King of kings, then be decided for him. Thus, without your being branded upon the brow, all will know to whom you belong.

经文: 你也必称为被眷顾的(察见)。(以赛亚书六十二:12)

从上帝超越的恩典清楚地显明,上帝不仅寻找我们,更把我们寻见了。我们如同混杂于泥浆里。当一块珍贵的金子掉入排水沟时,人会聚集在周围仔细观察一团团的污泥。他们不停搅动,扫视并搜寻直至觅回宝贝为止。或者,我们就如同在迷宫中迷失了一样,绝望地徘徊,直至慈悲的福音来寻见我们。我们并不是轻易就被寻见,乃是经过搜寻才将我们分别出来。我们如同迷失的羊一样,绝望地以为好牧人找不到我们了。荣繀归于永远得胜的恩典,我们被分别出来了!没有幽暗能遮蔽我们;没有污秽能隐藏我们。我们被祂寻见,被祂领回家。荣耀归于无限的爱,圣灵拯救我们!上帝常使用奇妙特殊的方法将祂自己的人带回来。愿祂的名受称颂,祂永不放弃搜寻直至祂的选民被寻见和分别出来为止。他们不是今天被寻见,明天就被抛弃。全能与智慧的结合永不失败。上帝的百姓被称为是“蒙眷顾(察见)的”!任何人都会蒙眷顾是无可比拟的恩典,但我们之蒙眷顾却是无可量度之恩典!不需要任何理由,上帝至高的大爱就说明一切。让我们举起惊叹的心赞美主。因为今晚我们披戴了“蒙眷顾的名号”。

Scripture: “Thou shalt be called, Sought out.”(Isaiah 62:12)

The surpassing grace of God is seen very clearly in that we were not only sought, but sought out. Men seek for a thing which is lost upon the floor of the house, but in such a case there is only seeking, not seeking out. The loss is more perplexing and the search more persevering when a thing is sought out. We were mingled with the mire: we were as when some precious piece of gold falls into the sewer, and men gather out and carefully inspect a mass of abominable filth, and continue to stir and rake, and search among the heap until the treasure is found. Or, to use another figure, we were lost in a labyrinth; we wandered hither and thither, and when mercy came after us with the gospel, it did not find us at the first coming, it had to search for us and seek us out; for we as lost sheep were so desperately lost, and had wandered into such a strange country, that it did not seem possible that even the Good Shepherd should track our devious roamings. Glory be to unconquerable grace, we were sought out! No gloom could hide us, no filthiness could conceal us, we were found and brought home. Glory be to infinite love, God the Holy Spirit restored us!
The lives of some of God’s people, if they could be written would fill us with holy astonishment. Strange and marvellous are the ways which God used in their case to find his own. Blessed be his name, he never relinquishes the search until the chosen are sought out effectually. They are not a people sought to-day and cast away to-morrow. Almightiness and wisdom combined will make no failures, they shall be called, “Sought out!” That any should be sought out is matchless grace, but that we should be sought out is grace beyond degree! We can find no reason for it but God’s own sovereign love, and can only lift up our heart in wonder, and praise the Lord that this night we wear the name of “Sought out.”

经文: 人……日子短少,多有患难。(约伯记十四:1)

知道自己不能避免灾难,实在令人不甚愉快。可是这事实却能使我们谦卑,并防止我们夸口说:“我永不动摇。”(诗三十:6)也能让我们不致将自己的根深扎在这片泥土中,因为我们不久将被移植到天国的花园中。让我们撤回要求这短暂福气的呼声。我们若能记住,世上所有的树木已被木匠作了记号,我们就不会轻易将巢筑在其上。我们的爱包含着预期死亡与分离的来临。我们所爱的亲友只是借给我们的,将他们归还债主的时刻可能不远了。属世的赀财也确是如此,财富会长翼飞去。我们的健康也同样是朝不保夕的。我们如同田野中脆弱的花朵,不会永久绽放。世上也没有一处可容我们逃避苦难的利箭。在这短暂的岁月中,没有人能避过忧伤。人的生命是充满苦难的桶,要在其中寻找喜乐比从充满盐水的海洋中寻找蜜糖更困难。不要将你的喜好建立在属世的事上,却要寻求从上面来的事物。地上有虫子来咬,也有贼挖窟窿来偷,在天上却有永不止息和永恒的喜乐。

Evening, March 10

Scripture: “Man … is of few days, and full of trouble.”(Job 14:1)

It may be of great service to us, before we fall asleep, to remember this mournful fact, for it may lead us to set loose by earthly things. There is nothing very pleasant in the recollection that we are not above the shafts of adversity, but it may humble us and prevent our boasting like the Psalmist in our morning’s portion. “My mountain standeth firm: I shall never be moved.” It may stay us from taking too deep root in this soil from which we are so soon to be transplanted into the heavenly garden. Let us recollect the frail tenure upon which we hold our temporal mercies. If we would remember that all the trees of earth are marked for the woodman’s axe, we should not be so ready to build our nests in them. We should love, but we should love with the love which expects death, and which reckons upon separations. Our dear relations are but loaned to us, and the hour when we must return them to the lender’s hand may be even at the door. The like is certainly true of our worldly goods. Do not riches take to themselves wings and fly away? Our health is equally precarious. Frail flowers of the field, we must not reckon upon blooming for ever. There is a time appointed for weakness and sickness, when we shall have to glorify God by suffering, and not by earnest activity. There is no single point in which we can hope to escape from the sharp arrows of affliction; out of our few days there is not one secure from sorrow. Man’s life is a cask full of bitter wine; he who looks for joy in it had better seek for honey in an ocean of brine. Beloved reader, set not your affections upon things of earth: but seek those things which are above, for here the moth devoureth, and the thief breaketh through, but there all joys are perpetual and eternal. The path of trouble is the way home. Lord, make this thought a pillow for many a weary head!

经文: 常在我里面。(约翰福音十五:4)

与基督相交是各种病痛得医治的良药。不论是忧伤的苦难或属世的纵欲,与主耶稣亲密相交可以除去苦涩和重压。你若居于耶稣附近,无论你的居所是在受尊崇的高山上或在卑下的低谷中,上帝的双翼将覆庇你,祂永久的膀臂在你下面(参阅申三十三:27)。但愿没有一事能拦阻你与主相交,那是与祂有婚约之灵的荣幸。常常寻求祂的陪绊,唯有祂的同在才有安慰和安全。耶稣并不是一位偶而来访的朋友,祂是我们每天与之同行的同伴。天路客啊,不要离开你的引导者,在你前面有艰辛的道路。你可能要经过火烧的熔炉,除非上帝的儿子与你作伴,否则切勿进入。你自己的过错就如同耶利哥城,你必须前去将它攻下。然而切勿贸然前赴战场,除非你像约书亚一样看到主军队的元师手持拔出来的剑。在每一件事、在每一情况中,你都需要耶稣。当死亡的铁门敞开之时,你最最需要祂。紧密与你灵的良人同在,将你的头紧靠在祂的胸膛上。倘若你在世上已与祂同住且住在祂里面,你能永远与祂同在。

Scripture: “Abide in me.”(John 15:4)

Communion with Christ is a certain cure for every ill. Whether it be the wormwood of woe, or the cloying surfeit of earthly delight, close fellowship with the Lord Jesus will take bitterness from the one, and satiety from the other. Live near to Jesus, Christian, and it is a matter of secondary importance whether thou livest on the mountain of honour or in the valley of humiliation. Living near to Jesus, thou art covered with the wings of God, and underneath thee are the everlasting arms. Let nothing keep thee from that hallowed intercourse, which is the choice privilege of a soul wedded to THE WELL-BELOVED . Be not content with an interview now and then, but seek always to retain his company, for only in his presence hast thou either comfort or safety. Jesus should not be unto us a friend who calls upon us now and then, but one with whom we walk evermore. Thou hast a difficult road before thee: see, O traveller to heaven, that thou go not without thy guide. Thou hast to pass through the fiery furnace; enter it not unless, like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, thou hast the Son of God to be thy companion. Thou hast to storm the Jericho of thine own corruptions: attempt not the warfare until, like Joshua, thou hast seen the Captain of the Lord’s host, with his sword drawn in his hand. Thou art to meet the Esau of thy many temptations: meet him not until at Jabbok’s brook thou hast laid hold upon the angel, and prevailed. In every case, in every condition, thou wilt need Jesus; but most of all, when the iron gates of death shall open to thee. Keep thou close to thy soul’s Husband, lean thy head upon his bosom, ask to be refreshed with the spiced wine of his pomegranate, and thou shalt be found of him at the last, without spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing. Seeing thou hast lived with him, and lived in him here, thou shalt abide with him for ever.

经文: 给她儿子起西叫便俄尼(忧愁之子),他父亲却给他起名叫便雅悯(我右手之子)。(创世记三十五:18)

每一事件都有其光明面也有其黑暗面。拉结被难产之痛苦击败逝去了。雅各虽为失去妻子而哭泣,却能见到美丽的婴儿诞生。当肉体为试验而悲哀,以至信心能更坚定,这试验于我们反倒有益的。波涛汹涌的大海以鱼喂养众人;原始丛林盛开着细巧的野花;怒号的狂风扫尽了黑死病;凛冽的冰霜凿松了泥土。黑云蒸馏出亮丽的水珠,黑土生长出灿烂的花朵。每一个坏矿中仍能寻得一条好脉。忧愁之心特别擅于发现最坏的观点,并从此角度来观察试验。倘若世上只有一片沼泽,人们仍会很快低陷其中。倘若森林中只有一头狮子,人们仍能听到它的咆哮。我们常常会像雅各一样地哭诉:“这些事都归到我身上。”(创四十二:36)。信心乃是将万事交托给主,然后能从最坏的不幸中预见美好的结局。经历撬开粗糙蚝壳般的艰辛,信心将获到珍贵的稀世之珠。从深海的危险礁洞中,伸展出无价的珊瑚。当淘涌潮水退后,信心从沙粒中发现了隐藏的珍珠。当喜乐的太阳西沈后,信心将希望之望远镜转向天堂繁星之应许。当死亡来临时,信心指向超越坟墓的复活之光。

Scripture: “She called his name Benoni (son of sorrow), but his father called him Benjamin (son of my right hand).”(Genesis 35:18)

To every matter there is a bright as well as a dark side. Rachel was overwhelmed with the sorrow of her own travail and death; Jacob, though weeping the mother’s loss, could see the mercy of the child’s birth. It is well for us if, while the flesh mourns over trials, our faith triumphs in divine faithfulness. Samson’s lion yielded honey, and so will our adversities, if rightly considered. The stormy sea feeds multitudes with its fishes; the wild wood blooms with beauteous florets; the stormy wind sweeps away the pestilence, and the biting frost loosens the soil. Dark clouds distil bright drops, and black earth grows gay flowers. A vein of good is to be found in every mine of evil. Sad hearts have peculiar skill in discovering the most disadvantageous point of view from which to gaze upon a trial; if there were only one slough in the world, they would soon be up to their necks in it, and if there were only one lion in the desert they would hear it roar. About us all there is a tinge of this wretched folly, and we are apt, at times, like Jacob, to cry, “All these things are against me.” Faith’s way of walking is to cast all care upon the Lord, and then to anticipate good results from the worst calamities. Like Gideon’s men, she does not fret over the broken pitcher, but rejoices that the lamp blazes forth the more. Out of the rough oyster-shell of difficulty she extracts the rare pearl of honour, and from the deep ocean-caves of distress she uplifts the priceless coral of experience. When her flood of prosperity ebbs, she finds treasures hid in the sands; and when her sun of delight goes down, she turns her telescope of hope to the starry promises of heaven. When death itself appears, faith points to the light of resurrection beyond the grave, thus making our dying Benoni to be our living Benjamin.

经文: 投靠耶和华,强似倚赖人。(诗篇一一八:8)

基督徒常常向人寻找帮助和协谈,以至损害了他们依赖上帝的崇高单纯性。今天傍晚,你是否为一些世俗的事务焦虑?在你的得救上,你能相信耶稣,那么你为什么还要烦恼?你会回答:“因为我有很深的忧虑。”圣经上写着:“你要把你的重担卸给耶和华。”(诗五十五:22)。应当一无挂虑,只要凡事藉着祷告、祈求、和感谢,将你们所要的告诉上帝。(腓四:6)。你若在世俗的事上不能信赖上帝,怎敢在属灵的事上信赖祂呢?你能在灵魂蒙拯救的事上信赖祂却不能在极小极少的需要上依靠祂吗?上帝于你所需是足够的,抑或祂的全然充足于你仍有短缺?祂的心是软弱的吗?祂的军队是疲惫吗?若然,你应该另找别神;但若祂是无限的、全能的、信实的、真理的、全智的、那么你不必再忙乱地去寻找其它的寄托。这个根基已够稳固,可以承担你在其上所加与的重量,为什么你还想找另外的根基呢?不要将对人信心的渣滓掺入你信心的纯金之中。单单等候上帝,让你一切期待从祂而来。选择沙地根基去建立属世的信托只是愚蠢人的作为。我们却是要因预见暴风雨的到来而将房屋建造在万古磐石之上。

Evening, March 7

Scripture: “It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put confidence in man.”(Psalm 118:8)

Doubtless the reader has been tried with the temptation to rely upon the things which are seen, instead of resting alone upon the invisible God. Christians often look to man for help and counsel, and mar the noble simplicity of their reliance upon their God. Does this evening’s portion meet the eye of a child of God anxious about temporals, then would we reason with him awhile. You trust in Jesus, and only in Jesus, for your salvation, then why are you troubled? “Because of my great care.” Is it not written, “Cast thy burden upon the Lord”? “Be careful for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication make known your wants unto God.” Cannot you trust God for temporals? “Ah! I wish I could.” If you cannot trust God for temporals, how dare you trust him for spirituals? Can you trust him for your soul’s redemption, and not rely upon him for a few lesser mercies? Is not God enough for thy need, or is his all-sufficiency too narrow for thy wants? Dost thou want another eye beside that of him who sees every secret thing? Is his heart faint? Is his arm weary? If so, seek another God; but if he be infinite, omnipotent, faithful, true, and all-wise, why gaddest thou abroad so much to seek another confidence? Why dost thou rake the earth to find another foundation, when this is strong enough to bear all the weight which thou canst ever build thereon? Christian, mix not only thy wine with water, do not alloy thy gold of faith with the dross of human confidence. Wait thou only upon God, and let thine expectation be from him. Covet not Jonah’s gourd, but rest in Jonah’s God. Let the sandy foundations of terrestrial trust be the choice of fools, but do thou, like one who foresees the storm, build for thyself an abiding place upon the Rock of Ages.
