经文: 有兴起重修这耶利哥城的人,当在耶和华面前受咒诅。(约书亚记六:26)

重建耶利哥城的人会受咒诅,那些在我们中间辛勤扩张撒但国度的人将受更多更大的咒诅。藉我们信仰的力量,努力的持续,福音号角吹响,罪恶的巨大堡垒必会倒塌。在除去每一项错误的事上我们必须严肃,因为错误能助长捆绑人的精神,变成不敬虔的原则,使我们对基督的爱变为不冷不热。当我们的家进行大扫除的同时,也应当寻求各种方法来反对罪在教会中和世界中之迅速扩散。这工作可藉在暗中的迫切祷告和公开的勇敢见证达成。我们必须警告那些容易相信假宗教之错误的人。我们必须以福音的真理教导年轻人。我们必须协助将光更完全地传播在此地球上,因为撒但的使者,像猫头鹰般恨恶日光。我们是否为耶稣、为福音尽了全力?若否,我们的疏忽就是中了敌人之计。圣经是魔鬼的致命毒药,我们如何传扬圣经?我们是否撒播仁慈美善的福音著作?路德曾说过:“魔鬼恨恶鹅管笔。”无疑的,他有正确的理由。圣经的作者,藉圣灵之恩助,大大损害了撒但的国度。若有成千的人今晚读此短短数语,且尽所能去阻止重建遭咒诅之耶利哥城,主的荣耀在人间迅速前进。你能作什么?你愿作什么?

Evening, May 29
Scripture: “Cursed be the man before the Lord, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho.”(Joshua 6:26)

Since he was cursed who rebuilt Jericho, much more the man who labours to restore Popery among us. In our fathers’ days the gigantic walls of Popery fell by the power of their faith, the perseverance of their efforts, and the blast of their gospel trumpets; and now there are some who would rebuild that accursed system upon its old foundation. O Lord, be pleased to thwart their unrighteous endeavours, and pull down every stone which they build. It should be a serious business with us to be thoroughly purged of every error which may have a tendency to foster the spirit of Popery, and when we have made a clean sweep at home we should seek in every way to oppose its all too rapid spread abroad in the church and in the world. This last can be done in secret by fervent prayer, and in public by decided testimony. We must warn with judicious boldness those who are inclined towards the errors of Rome; we must instruct the young in gospel truth, and tell them of the black doings of Popery in the olden times. We must aid in spreading the light more thoroughly through the land, for priests, like owls, hate daylight. Are we doing all we can for Jesus and the gospel? If not, our negligence plays into the hands of the priestcraft. What are we doing to spread the Bible, which is the Pope’s bane and poison? Are we casting abroad good, sound gospel writings? Luther once said, “The devil hates goose quills” and, doubtless, he has good reason, for ready writers, by the Holy Spirit’s blessing, have done his kingdom much damage. If the thousands who will read this short word this night will do all they can to hinder the rebuilding of this accursed Jericho, the Lord’s glory shall speed among the sons of men. Reader, what can you do? What will you do?

记忆常是抑郁症之奴隶。绝望之头脑常记忆过去每一黑暗的经验,并将目前每一阴暗面扩大。披上麻布的记忆,代表混合胆汁的杯,对大脑是苦涩的。然而,你并不需要这样。智慧能将记忆转变成安慰的天使。曾带来许多阴暗之预兆的记忆,可以成为丰富希望的记号。这是耶利米的经验。记忆使他的心灵变为深度的谦卑:“我心想念这些,就在里面忧闷。”(哀三:20)然而,同样的记忆使他恢复生机和安慰。“我想起这事,心里就有指望。”我们若更能智慧运用记忆,在最黑暗的忧伤中,就可以点燃一枝火柴,使安慰之灯立即发光。上帝无需创造一种新方法使信徒恢复喜乐。他们若以祈求的心态耙掉过去的尘埃,就能为今日找到光明。若转向真理之书和恩典的宝座,他们的蜡烛很快便能再度照亮。我们的责任是要牢记主的仁慈,并回忆祂所行的恩典。让我们打开回忆录,回想上帝的仁慈如何大大地照亮。柯尔雷基称记忆为“喜乐的盛春”。当上帝的训慰师专致工作时,首要之事是使世间受安慰的人回忆往事。

Evening, May 28
Scripture: “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.”(Lamentations 3:21)

Memory is frequently the bond slave of despondency. Dispairing minds call to remembrance every dark foreboding in the past, and dilate upon every gloomy feature in the present; thus memory, clothed in sackcloth, presents to the mind a cup of mingled gall and wormwood. There is, however, no necessity for this. Wisdom can readily transform memory into an angel of comfort. That same recollection which in its left hand brings so many gloomy omens, may be trained to bear in its right a wealth of hopeful signs. She need not wear a crown of iron, she may encircle her brow with a fillet of gold, all spangled with stars. Thus it was in Jeremiah’s experience: in the previous verse memory had brought him to deep humiliation of soul: “My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me;” and now this same memory restored him to life and comfort. “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.” Like a two-edged sword, his memory first killed his pride with one edge, and then slew his despair with the other. As a general principle, if we would exercise our memories more wisely, we might, in our very darkest distress, strike a match which would instantaneously kindle the lamp of comfort. There is no need for God to create a new thing upon the earth in order to restore believers to joy; if they would prayerfully rake the ashes of the past, they would find light for the present; and if they would turn to the book of truth and the throne of grace, their candle would soon shine as aforetime. Be it ours to remember the lovingkindness of the Lord, and to rehearse his deeds of grace. Let us open the volume of recollection which is so richly illuminated with memorials of mercy, and we shall soon be happy. Thus memory may be, as Coleridge calls it, “the bosom-spring of joy,” and when the Divine Comforter bends it to his service, it may be chief among earthly comforters.

我们得的恩典越多,就越发不敢骄傲。恩典像光一段揭露了我们的不洁。杰出的圣徒极少认为自己可以与什么作比较,因他们敏感到自己的不配。圣拉塞福说:“我是枯干凋谢之树枝,一片死肉、枯骨,连跨过一条干草都不能。”自然界最低微的物体都有其优点,因为它们不会沾染罪。狗可能是贪婪、凶恶、或肮脏的,但是祂没有良知可以违背,也毋需抗拒圣灵。狗可能是没有价值的动物,然而向它表示些微仁慈,它就会爱主人甚至为他忠心至死。我们甚至会忘记主的仁慈,当祂呼召时也不跟随祂。死狗是最能表达轻蔑的术语,但用于受教信徒的自我厌恶也不为过。他们不仅假冒谦虚,其实他们己将自己在圣所的天平上秤量过,并且发现自己本质中之虚假。其实,我们不过是泥土和赋予生气之尘埃。但从罪人的观点看,我们却如巨物。真奇妙,主耶稣竟爱我们。虽然我们不过是尘土,却仍需“显出祂的能力是何等浩大”(弗一:19)。祂在天国能安心吗?或是祂必须往其他地方去寻找祂纯洁、无玷污的新妇?

Evening, May 27
Scripture: “What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?”(2 Samuel 9:8)

If Mephibosheth was thus humbled by David’s kindness, what shallwe be in the presence of our gracious Lord? The more grace we have, the less we shall think of ourselves, for grace, like light, reveals our impurity. Eminent saints have scarcely known to what to compare themselves, their sense of unworthiness has been so clear and keen. “I am,” says holy Rutherford, “a dry and withered branch, a piece of dead carcass, dry bones, and not able to step over a straw.” In another place he writes, “Except as to open outbreakings, I want nothing of what Judas and Cain had.” The meanest objects in nature appear to the humbled mind to have a preference above itself, because they have never contracted sin: a dog may be greedy, fierce, or filthy, but it has no conscience to violate, no Holy Spirit to resist. A dog may be a worthless animal, and yet by a little kindness it is soon won to love its master, and is faithful unto death; but we forget the goodness of the Lord, and follow not at his call. The term “dead dog” is the most expressive of all terms of contempt, but it is none too strong to express the self- abhorrence of instructed believers. They do not affect mock modesty, they mean what they say, they have weighed themselves in the balances of the sanctuary, and found out the vanity of their nature. At best, we are but clay, animated dust, mere walking hillocks; but viewed as sinners, we are monsters indeed. Let it be published in heaven as a wonder, that the Lord Jesus should set his heart’s love upon such as we are. Dust and ashes though we be, we must and will “magnify the exceeding greatness of his grace.” Could not his heart find rest in heaven? Must he needs come to these tents of Kedar for a spouse, and choose a bride upon whom the sun had looked? O heavens and earth, break forth into a song, and give all glory to our sweet Lord Jesus.

经文: 恒守所信的道。(使徒行传十四:22)

坚恃恒守是真正圣徒的徽章。基督徒的生命不只是在上帝的道上开始,更是一生之信心的持续。拿破仑说:“得胜使我成为如今的我,而得胜也维持我。”基督徒也该如此。唯一真正的征服者,也就是可以获得冠冕的,是持续至战争的号角不再吹响的人。因此,坚持就成为我们所有属灵仇敌的攻击目标。世界并不反对你作一时的基督徒,反而会引诱你放弃走天国的旅程,而安于这浮华世界。肉体会缠累你,阻止你努力走向荣耀。“作基督徒真是累啊,放弃吧。我必须时时谦卑吗?我永不可放任自己吗?在这不断的争战中,至少给我几天假期吧!”对你的坚持,撒但总是发动许多凶猛的攻击。它所有的目标是你的恒守。它要拚命的阻挠你的事奉。更要以间接纡曲的方式告诉你,你所作的并不好。它要竭力使你疲于忍受苦难。它要对你轻声耳语:“弃掉上帝、死了吧!”(伯二:9)它会攻击你的坚定:“你如此热心有什么好处?你可以像其他人那安分守已。”它会诘问你的信仰:“你为何要守住这些宗教信条?敏感的人是不受拘束的。他们在移动路标,你也当适应时代的变化。”基督徒啊!戴上你的盔甲,穿上你的军装。恳求上帝藉着圣灵使你能忍耐到底。

Evening, May 26
Scripture: “Continue in the faith.”(Acts 14:22)

Perseverance is the badge of true saints. The Christian life is not a beginning only in the ways of God, but also a continuance in the same as long as life lasts. It is with a Christian as it was with the great Napoleon: he said, “Conquest has made me what I am, and conquest must maintain me.” So, under God, dear brother in the Lord, conquest has made you what you are, and conquest must sustain you. Your motto must be, “Excelsior.” He only is a true conqueror, and shall be crowned at the last, who continueth till war’s trumpet is blown no more. Perseverance is, therefore, the target of all our spiritual enemies. The world does not object to your being a Christian for a time, if she can but tempt you to cease your pilgrimage, and settle down to buy and sell with her in Vanity Fair. The flesh will seek to ensnare you, and to prevent your pressing on to glory. “It is weary work being a pilgrim; come, give it up. Am I always to be mortified? Am I never to be indulged? Give me at least a furlough from this constant warfare.” Satan will make many a fierce attack on your perseverance; it will be the mark for all his arrows. He will strive to hinder you in service: he will insinuate that you are doing no good; and that you want rest. He will endeavour to make you weary of suffering, he will whisper, “Curse God, and die.” Or he will attack your steadfastness: “What is the good of being so zealous? Be quiet like the rest; sleep as do others, and let your lamp go out as the other virgins do.” Or he will assail your doctrinal sentiments: “Why do you hold to these denominational creeds? Sensible men are getting more liberal; they are removing the old landmarks: fall in with the times.” Wear your shield, Christian, therefore, close upon your armour, and cry mightily unto God, that by his Spirit you may endure to the end.

当两个门徒抵达以马忤斯,要吃晚餐补充体力时,与他门同行、使他们心里火热起来的神秘陌生人,拿起饼来擘开了,他们就认出祂来。忽然耶稣不见了。他们原本强留祂住下,因为已是傍晚时分。现在虽然时间更晚了,但他们的爱已成为眼睛之灯和脚下之翼,使他们能立即起身,赶了七哩半的路程回去,为要告诉伙伴们复活主的荣耀信息。当他们回到耶路撒冷时,门徒以其他喜乐的信息欢迎他们的归来。他们兴奋地谈论基督的复活和宣扬他们所认识的主。我们也必须在有关耶稣的事上有自己的见证。约翰叙述了空的坟墓,接着彼得作了补充,继而马利亚有更详细描述。综各人所见。我们得到一个完整的见证,不能遗漏其中任何部份。我们每人各有特殊的恩赐和特别的才能。上帝的最终目标是使基督整个身体达到完全。我们必须带着自己的灵魂、财富与别人分享上帝所赐予的。讲述你所知,见证你所见。不要让你的朋友将任何辛劳、黑暗或可能之怀疑置于天秤上。起来吧!向你的岗位前进,向世人述说上帝为你作成的伟大事情。

Evening, May 25
Scripture: “And they rose up the same hour, and returned Jerusalem … and they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them.”(Luke 24:33,35)

When the two disciples had reached Emmaus, and were refreshing themselves at the evening meal, the mysterious stranger who had so enchanted them upon the road, took bread and brake it, made himself known to them, and then vanished out of their sight. They had constrained him to abide with them, because the day was far spent; but now, although it was much later, their love was a lamp to their feet, yea, wings also; they forgot the darkness, their weariness was all gone, and forthwith they journeyed back the threescore furlongs to tell the gladsome news of a risen Lord, who had appeared to them by the way. They reached the Christians in Jerusalem, and were received by a burst of joyful news before they could tell their own tale. These early Christians were all on fire to speak of Christ’s resurrection, and to proclaim what they knew of the Lord; they made common property of their experiences. This evening let their example impress us deeply. We too must bear our witness concerning Jesus. John’s account of the sepulchre needed to be supplemented by Peter; and Mary could speak of something further still; combined, we have a full testimony from which nothing can be spared. We have each of us peculiar gifts and special manifestations; but the one object God has in view is the perfecting of the whole body of Christ. We must, therefore, bring our spiritual possessions and lay them at the apostle’s feet, and make distribution unto all of what God has given to us. Keep back no part of the precious truth, but speak what you know, and testify what you have seen. Let not the toil or darkness, or possible unbelief of your friends, weigh one moment in the scale. Up, and be marching to the place of duty, and there tell what great things God has shown to your soul.

经文: 只要你们行事为人与基督的福音相称。(腓立比书一:27)

行事为人包括我们生命的全部过程,和在世上的一切行为。希腊原文中,这个字强调的是公民的行动和权利。因此,上帝命令我们的行为要像新耶路撒冷的公民,使基督的福音得荣耀。福音原本十分简单。我们的仪式、言词、衣着和全部的行为皆需简单化。这是美丽的中心内涵。福音是完全真实的。基督徒的生命若缺少真理的珠宝就失去光辉、毫无价值。福音是不怕一切的福音,勇敢地向世人宣告真理,不论人喜爱与否。我们必须同样忠诚、不畏缩。但是福音也是十分温柔的。请注意福音的基本精神:“压伤的芦苇祂不折断。”(太十二:20)让我们以温柔的言语和行动来赢得人。福音更是无比的爱。它是上帝向失丧堕落的人所发出的爱之信息。基督向祂的门徒发出最后的命令:“你们要彼此相爱。”(约十三:34)但愿在圣徒之中有更多的爱和更强的合一。但愿向那些最恶劣、最卑贱的灵魂有更多的温柔怜悯!我们必不能忘记基督的福音是圣洁的。它永不接受罪恶,唯有经过赎罪才能得赦免。如果我们的生活要与福音相称,就必须规避每样阻挠我们完全顺服基督之事。为了祂,为了我们自己,也为了其他人,我们必须日复一日的奋力,使我们行事为人与祂的福音一致。

Evening, May 24
Scripture: “Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ.”(Philippians 1:27)

The word “conversation” does not merely mean our talk and converse with one another, but the whole course of our life and behaviour in the world. The Greek word signifies the actions and the privileges of citizenship: and thus we are commanded to let our actions, as citizens of the New Jerusalem, be such as becometh the gospel of Christ. What sort of conversation is this? In the first place, the gospel is very simple. So Christians should be simple and plain in their habits. There should be about our manner, our speech, our dress, our whole behaviour, that simplicity which is the very soul of beauty. The gospel is pre-eminently true, it is gold without dross; and the Christian’s life will be lustreless and valueless without the jewel of truth. The gospel is a very fearless gospel, it boldly proclaims the truth, whether men like it or not: we must be equally faithful and unflinching. But the gospel is also very gentle. Mark this spirit in its Founder: “a bruised reed he will not break.” Some professors are sharper than a thorn-hedge; such men are not like Jesus. Let us seek to win others by the gentleness of our words and acts. The gospel is very loving. It is the message of the God of love to a lost and fallen race. Christ’s last command to his disciples was, “Love one another.” O for more real, hearty union and love to all the saints; for more tender compassion towards the souls of the worst and vilest of men! We must not forget that the gospel of Christ is holy. It never excuses sin: it pardons it, but only through an atonement. If our life is to resemble the gospel, we must shun, not merely the grosser vices, but everything that would hinder our perfect conformity to Christ. For his sake, for our own sakes, and for the sakes of others, we must strive day by day to let our conversation be more in accordance with his gospel.
